Introduction to shoulder straps

Shoulder straps are functional components of clothing, connecting the front and back panels and passing over the shoulders. In modern garments, shoulder straps are used to hang items and enhance the garment's structure. In ancient times, they took various forms, such as the straps of the ancient Greek hematschana and the tunic of the ancient Egyptian tunic.

Originating in ancient Greece, the "shoulder garment" was an 18 x 6-foot strip of wool or linen draped in a specific way and was a primary garment for men. In Roman times, the shoulder garment became the attire of scholars and tutors, later adopted by Christian clergy and gradually evolving into folded shoulder straps. Their size, fastening methods, and decorations (such as cross patterns) continuously changed, and they were imbued with symbolic meaning representing the identity of a tutor and pastoral duties. Their style continued to simplify and develop in later generations.
